Esther Lawellin

Esther J. Lawellin, age 63, Joplin, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016, in St. Louis, Missouri after a lengthy illness.

Esther was born February 19, 1953, in Aurora, Missouri, daughter of the late Rev. Freddie Wright and Oletta Black Wright. She grew up in Monett, Missouri, graduated from Joplin Memorial high school as a member of the Honor Society, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, where she was a Homecoming Queen in 1974. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church where she volunteered much time to help others and was very involved in the church’s ministries. Her friends and family described her as being caring of others and always eager to help.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Doug Lawellin, whom she married August 10, 1979; son, Daniel Lawellin and wife Kendyll of St. Louis, Missouri; daughter, Dacia Gomez and her husband John of New Orleans, Louisiana, and daughter, Danita Martin and her husband Jay of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Kendrick Lawellin, Kensington Lawellin, Corbin Gomez, Cameron Gomez, and Ivy Gomez; brother, David Wright; sisters, Pamela Backerman and Brenda Richards and husband Robert; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service is planned for Wednesday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Southside Baptist Church, Joplin, with Rev. Phil Owens, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
