Fern James

Fern was called home on October 8, 2021, after a short illness with her children by her side. Born to Frank and Ireta (Roller) Hency on November 28, 1936, in Seligman, Missouri. They moved to Neosho where she started school, then, moved to Diamond where she graduated. 

Fern married Bill James on August 29, 1963, in Joplin, Missouri he preceded her in death on April 26, 1985.

Fern was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Diamond, Missouri. She worked fifty years in the cafeteria at the Diamond schools, where she was loved by everyone. 








She took an active interest in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s sports, and school activities. She loved to travel and go on cruises. Fern traveled with her daughters, and sister for many years seeing the sights. She then started traveling with her daughters and great-granddaughters. Fern loved going to Tennessee, so a lot of vacations were spent there. The trips with her great-granddaughters were an incredibly special time spent together.

She is survived by her five children, Karen (Ralph) Quinton of Neosho, Missouri, Charles (Shirley) Gray of Neosho, Missouri, Judy (Vince) Coker of Diamond, Missouri, David (Melissa) James of Neosho, Missouri, Carl (Cassie) James of Diamond, Missouri; brother, Elvis Hency of Diamond, Missouri; sister Faye Wallace of Diamond, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; special friend and cousin Lois Avery of Granby, Missouri, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Fern is preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Evelyn Hency; niece, Tamara Hency; brother-in-law, Bud Wallace, and uncle, Ethan Roller.

Her grandsons, Matthew Quinton, Caleb James, Chad Gray, Ethan Gray, Tyler James, and Mason James will serve as pallbearers.

A visitation will be held Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 5 pm- 7 pm at Clark Funeral Home, Neosho Missouri. A funeral service will be held at the United Methodist Church, Diamond, Missouri on Friday, October 15, 2021, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Diamond Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the St. Jude’s Hospital c/o Clark Funeral Home, PO Box 66, Neosho, Mo 64850. This hospital was very important to her.
